ANSWER:
Week 4 | Part 4: Research Analysis
I have identified one topic of interest for further study. I have researched and identified one peer-reviewed research article focused on this topic and have analyzed this article. The results of these efforts are shared below.
Directions: Complete Step 1 by using the table and subsequent space below identify and analyze the research article you have selected. Complete Step 2 by summarizing in 2-3 paragraphs the results of your analysis using the space identified.
Step 1: Research Analysis
Complete the table below
Topic of Interest: | ||||
Research Article: Include full citation in APA format, as well as link or search details (such as DOI) | Hou, T., Zhang, T., Cai, W., Song, X., Chen, A., Deng, G., & Ni, C. (2020). Social support and mental health among health care workers during Coronavirus Disease 2019 outbreak: A moderated mediation model. PloS one, 15(5), e0233831. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0233831
Professional Practice Use:
One or more professional practice uses of the theories/concepts presented in the article |
The article profoundly considers the critical theory by recognizing the need for social support of healthcare workers of all ages in the times of COVID-19 pandemic despite their current resilience levels. It analyses previous studies conducted and develops a model guiding the whole research hence synthesize meaningful conclusions applicable in practice.
Research Analysis Matrix
Add more rows if necessary |
Strengths of the Research | Limitations of the Research | Relevancy to Topic of Interest | Notes |
Analysis of current affairs |
It was done in one geographical location (Jiangsu Province of China) | The topic is ccurrent and talks of how healthcare workers can be supported to enhance their efficiency in this pandemic times.
Focus on all age groups and people of different resilience levels
|
The duration of study was low (from 1st to 7th February 2020) | The study was conducted in a region struct with the pandemic hence proving relevant for data retrieval
The paper is a quantitative research with appropriate methodologies to guide study. |
The age group was limited with the study excluding healthcare workers above 50 years. The paper does not indicate reasons for this | Most studies have focused on mental health of patients and their classes of individuals and not healthcare providers. This is the first article to give results on that with age comparisons | To enhance the productivity of healthcare workers in the looming Covid-19 pandemic, it is necessary to provide social support to them.
The sample size was huge enough with 1521 healthcare workers participating.
|
The study utilized a cross-sectional design model with variation in participants involved in the study | The study puts into consideration existing abnormalities among different healthcare workers thus use the data in deducing results with consideration of resilience levels. | The young healthcare workers tend to be more resilient than the old. Similarly, resilience is a pathway that contributes to mental health through social support
Data analysis was quite rigorous with use of scientific statistical methods.
|
Data collected was through self-reporting which undermined generalization of results.
The paper describes the biases of psychological abnormalities among the participants and it effect on generation of results
|
The study failed to consider the broad effect on mental health and only narrowed down to social support.

Step 2: Summary of Analysis
Craft a summary (2-3 paragraph) below that includes the following:
- Describe your approach to identifying and analyzing peer-reviewed research
- Identify at least two strategies that you would use that you found to be effective in finding peer-reviewed research
- Identify at least one resource you intend to use in the future to find peer-reviewed research
After identifying essential words related to my area of interest, I opted to utilize an online research database to identify relevant and peer-reviewed articles. My focus was on PubMed’s use, considering its vast number of journals and open-source factor in data retrieval. Similarly, it is government-owned, which increases security and creates trust in the data obtained. I utilized the advanced search to filter the journals by year, article type, category, among other screening techniques.
One effective strategy highly recommendable is the use of the filters located on the left-hand side of the page. This helps in narrowing down the results and reduce the wastage of time. It is also vital to identify the keywords and use them in the search since more meaningful word content in the search relays massive data, with most being irrelevant. Secondly, the utilization of the links after the retrieval of the journal is essential. Most of the searches give only the abstract of the article, which is not sufficient for the synthesis of information. However, on the top left corner of the website with an open page of the desired article, there exist links to the full-text of the article.
Google Scholar is a resource I intend to use in the future. This because of the ability to give more relevant results as well as an indication of the number of citations made before the opening of the article. However, it is more convenient to use more than one database and use personal judgment to determine the relevance of the articles.
