Discussion: Nurse/Patient Empowerment

Discussion: Nurse/Patient Empowerment

ANSWER:

Nurse/Patient Empowerment

The nursing fraternity plays a vital role in the healthcare system of a given legal jurisdiction. They ensure that they provide effective and efficient primary care to patients. This means that nursing empowerment is equally essential to health care organizations. Nursing- patient empowerment creates a positive working environment. It entails decision-making from patients concerning their health. The nurses’ role here is to ensure that the patients get the right information and make conscious decisions about their health promotion.

Additionally, nurses encourage patients to take active roles in their health care management by educating them on the best treatment and strategies that can be employed. Nursing empowerment can be defined as the multi-dimensional process of giving nurses the power of their lives and others. It can be done by redefining the nursing practice and rejuvenating theories and models. Powerless nurses feel dissatisfied with their work duties, which results in in-efficient and in-effective patient care. Furthermore, all this eventually results in optimal work performance in the health care organization (Radhakrishnan & Anuchithra, 2016)

Strategies of Empowering Patients

Healthcare settings continue to evolve rapidly in terms of government regulations, payment models, and operation technology systems. Regardless of these changes, the patient and nurse relationship remains to be of importance. A study conducted in 2016 to establish what patients want from health care organizations revealed that 75% of patients are interested more in a personalized relationship with their caregivers (Recio-Saucedo et al., 2017). Nurses can facilitate patient empowerment through different strategies to attain the desired health outcomes. It begins with creating a safe environment for the patients: one that has respect and empathy. Advocating for patients’ rights to quality health care and providing correct information also helps in patient empowerment.

National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) Support for Nurses

NDNQI is rated to be the best data dashboard in the United States. It shows the impact that nurses have on quality care. The indicators are susceptible to primary caregiving; they reflect the importance of nursing care to patient health outcomes. A good example is oral and skincare treatment interventions. The NDNQI board can support nursing empowerment by creating safe working environments for them, improving reimbursement under current paying performance policies, and provides actionable data to identify problems. NDNQI enables hospitals to evaluate and monitor their improvement plan (By Kelly Sodders, BSN, RN, NE-BC Annette Drake, MS, RN, CRRN, CBIS, 2018).

My health care organization has empowered nurses by enrolling us in NDQNI educational modules. This training educates nurses on treatments such as pressure ulcer identification, staging, and sourcing. It has also taught us how to use and cooperate with the data in our everyday practice and has made it easily accessible to every nurse. Our organization has also helped us in understanding g the clinical and staffing data of all registered nurses.

As a nurse, I understand that I am my patients’ advocate; my patients need someone who can look out for their best interest and help them navigate the confusing health care system. I do this with all my nurses. I recently approached the health care organization stakeholders regarding them, creating a safer environment for my patients after experiencing fall cases during my shift. The matter was dealt with, and patient fall cases decreased. Lastly, Nurse-Patient empowerment needs to be given more attention in health care organizations. Patient empowerment should be increased and allow them to get involved in decisions on their health

QUESTION:

As a nurse, you are the individual who has the ability to empower patients in the decision-making process pertaining to their health care. In addition, you are in a unique position to empower your nursing colleagues to improve job satisfaction and use performance indicator data from dashboards to effect social change.

In this week’s Learning Resources, you examined both the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) and the key role nurses play as advocates for patient rights. To assist nurses in being better prepared for this role, programs such as Patient Care Partnership provide guidance.

For this Discussion, you will analyze the use of quality improvement data and discuss how this data can help empower both patients and nurses. Review the Patient Care Partnership information presented in this week’s Resources. In addition, reflect on the media presentation and the information shared by Ms. Manna on patients’ rights.

Respond to the following:

What are the best strategies the nurse can employ to empower patients and support patients’ rights to improve quality of care? (Some considerations to keep in mind may include: providing information on effectiveness, risks, and benefits of alternative treatments.)

In what ways can NDNQI data from dashboards or quality improvement data be used to support nurse empowerment in practice?

How has your institution empowered the nursing staff through the use of quality improvement data?

Provide an example of how you have personally empowered either a patient or a fellow nurse.

Support your response with references from the professional nursing literature.

Note Initial Post: A 3-paragraph (at least 350 words) response. Be sure to use evidence from the readings and include in-text citations. Utilize essay-level writing practice and skills, including the use of transitional material and organizational frames. Avoid quotes; paraphrase to incorporate evidence into your own writing. A reference list is required. Use the most current evidence (usually ≤ 5 years old).
