Leadership in Nursing
Management and leadership roles differ across the healthcare continuum. Nursing headship is an essential aspect of the functioning of patient care and nursing units. Registered nurses are responsible for patient care outcomes. In addition to that, they lead colleagues from different ancillary groups and oversee the patient care teams. This paper identifies the characteristics that make nurses leaders. Advanced practice nurses’ collaboration with other health workers in an organization is also discussed in the paper.
All nurses are considered leaders regardless of the practice setting. Nurses portray leadership qualities in daily activities (Wei, Roberts, Strickler and Corbett 2019). Nurses’ qualities are proper communication with clients and other health providers, critical thinking, especially during lifesaving events, and teaching the patients and other nurses during the practice. Nurses also provide support and encouragement to patients, fellow nurses, and even physicians.
Nurses in leadership illustrate specific characteristics and qualities. According to research, nurse leaders’ dynamic attributes are based on their function, roles, culture, and personality (Kelly and Adams 2018). Using their knowledge to mobilize resources to achieve the medical field’s goals is a significant characteristic of a nurse leader. Another essential element of a good leader is communicating with people within the health facility articulately. Nurse leaders are expected to lead by example in upholding work ethics, being courageous, and sensitive to patients and their families. Besides, nurses are expected to identify and nurture leadership in other nurses as well.
In conclusion, advanced practice nurses should collaborate with health stakeholders to improve the quality of services offered. The health workers should create and seek opportunities for support and collaboration at all levels of the organization. APN should encourage other nurses to join nursing associations that develop relevant skills in leadership and operation.
